When someone difficult dies, people work at forgetting their flaws and try to ‘smooth out the wrinkles’ in a life that was not smooth at all….especially for those on the receiving end of their anger, meanness, irritability etc. Grieving what you NEVER had is equally as painful as grieving what you lost.
